Garden Art, Planted: How JJ Potts Studio Mushrooms, Worms & Flower Puddlers Look in a Real Garden

There's a difference between seeing garden art on a plain white background and seeing it where it actually lives — tucked into a hosta bed, catching the morning light next to a birdhouse. So we planted ours and grabbed the camera.

Everything below is handmade and hand-glazed in our studio, and made in the USA. Here's how the three pieces people ask about most look once they're out in a real garden.

Shroomyz: color for the shady corners

Hostas love shade, which means the spots they grow in can read a little flat and green. A cluster of hand-glazed ceramic Shroomyz mushrooms — a purple cap here, a red polka-dot there, a pop of lime green — turns that quiet corner into something you notice from the porch.

Because we make them in a range of sizes (everything from our tiny Pico size up to full-size caps), you can layer them for a clustered, just-sprouted look rather than lining them up like soldiers. They're frostproof, so they can stay out year-round.

Wormyz: the ones that make people smile

Our ceramic Wormyz are the piece visitors always reach for. Threaded through variegated hosta leaves, the red, blue, and green worms look like they're caught mid-wiggle. They're glossy, weatherable, and — fair warning — kids will absolutely name them.

Flower Puddlers: part art, part bird bath

Flower Puddlers do double duty. Each one is a handmade ceramic flower on a stake, and the cupped center holds a little water — a small drink for the birds and pollinators that visit your beds. The swirl and honeycomb glazes catch the light differently throughout the day, so they never look quite the same twice.

Handmade, and made to live outside

Every Shroomyz, Wormyz, and Flower Puddler is hand-formed and hand-glazed in our studio, so no two are identical. And the photo above isn't a staged set — it's a real garden-center display, the kind you'll find stocking our pieces in the Midwest and beyond. Stop by your local garden center to see them in person, or shop the full collection online and build your own little scene.
